How to invest in gold in the Philippines — physical gold, gold funds and ETFs, and digital gold
Quick Answer

Retail investors in the Philippines can buy gold four real ways: physical (jewelers, Cebuana Lhuillier gold bars), tokenized digital gold (GCash GCrypto, PDAX Gold), PSE-listed gold mining stocks (not the metal itself), or international gold ETFs through a global broker.

BSP does not sell gold to the public — its Gold Buying Program only buys, mainly from small-scale miners and accredited traders. And there is currently no gold-backed ETF listed on the PSE.

⚠ The most common mistake in gold-investing content
A lot of what's published about "buying gold from BSP" gets this backwards. Section 2 explains exactly what BSP does and doesn't do — worth reading before you go looking for a BSP gold counter, because there isn't one.

1Why Filipinos invest in gold

MPH takeGold's pitch hasn't changed in centuries: it doesn't default, and it doesn't depend on any single government's finances.

Market dataFrom 2000 to 2025, gold's US-dollar price rose roughly 1,075% in total — an average of about 10.9% a year — but not in a straight line: 2013 alone saw a 28% drop. The past two years have been the outlier, not the norm: gold rose roughly 27% in 2024 and another ~27% in 2025, one of its strongest two-year runs on record, driven largely by heavy central-bank buying and global economic uncertainty. Don't anchor your expectations to that recent run; the multi-decade average is the more realistic baseline.

The peso angle matters here. Gold is priced in US dollars internationally, then converted to pesos. So when the peso weakens against the dollar, gold's peso price usually rises on top of whatever the dollar price does — though that relationship isn't guaranteed every time.

Example: if global gold is flat in USD terms but the peso weakens 5% against the dollar, gold's peso price would rise roughly 5% purely from the currency move — no change in gold's actual global value required.

One thing that surprises new gold buyers: it's hard to flip for a quick profit. Gold's price is public and updates constantly — a Manila pawnshop and a global bank are looking at the same spot price in real time, so there's little room for the pricing gaps that let you buy low and sell high fast elsewhere. Gold rewards patience, not quick trades.

That's the pitch — and the catch. Gold isn't a substitute for an emergency fund, it can lose value like any other asset, and it doesn't pay dividends or interest the way stocks or bonds can. Treat it as a stabilizer you're comfortable holding through flat years, not a growth engine and not your whole plan. This isn't a recommendation to buy gold — whether it fits your portfolio depends on your goals, timeline, and risk tolerance, and a licensed financial adviser can help you weigh that.

2What BSP actually does (and doesn't)

Quick FYI: no, you can't buy gold from BSP. Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas runs a Gold Buying Program (under RA 7076 and RA 11256) — but it only buys refined gold, in bar or disc form, from small-scale miners, accredited traders, and qualifying private sellers, to build up the country's reserves. There's no BSP counter, coin, or bar for the public to purchase.

If a seller or article implies otherwise, that's a red flag on its own — see Section 6.

3The 4 real ways to buy gold here

Filipinos can buy gold four ways: physically from jewelers or pawnshop gold bars, as tokenized digital gold through GCash or PDAX, as PSE-listed gold mining stocks, or through an international gold ETF via a global broker. Details on each below.

1. Physical gold — bars from reputable jewelers Tangible

Where: Reputable jewelers, or standardized products like Cebuana Lhuillier's investment-grade gold bars, sold by weight with a certificate of authenticity.

How it works: You pay spot price plus a markup (craftsmanship, brand, dealer margin). Cebuana's gold bars have historically come with a buyback guarantee at a percentage of current market value — confirm the current buyback % and gram pricing directly with a branch before buying, these move with gold prices and have changed over time.

  • Start small — 1g, 5g, or 10g bars are the easiest to afford, verify, and resell later.
  • Buy only 24K gold, and only if it comes with a serial number and a certificate of authenticity — anything less isn't investment-grade.
  • Keep the original invoice and packaging. Both matter when you sell or need to prove authenticity later.
  • Check the dealer's price against the current international gold spot price before buying — a markup is normal, an excessive one isn't.

MPH takeMight fit people who want to physically hold and store the asset, and who are comfortable dealing in person rather than through an app.

2. Tokenized digital gold — GCash, PDAX Low entry

Where: GCash's GCrypto tab and PDAX both sell gold as a digital token, priced per gram — BSP-regulated, backed by Tether Gold (XAU₮). You're buying a peso-in, peso-out position tracking vault gold, not the metal itself, and neither lets you redeem it for a physical bar.

Entry point: ₱500 minimum on both, confirmed directly with each platform. No storage fees — the cost lives in the buy/sell spread instead.

Watch for: both apply tiered e-KYC (identity verification) limits under BSP Circular No. 1170. Verify your tier before a big purchase, or you'll hit a wall mid-buy.

MPH takeMight fit beginners who want small, frequent buy-ins and zero storage hassle. Trade-off: you're trusting a platform and an underlying token issuer, not holding metal.

3. Gold mining stocks on the PSE Indirect

Where: Philippine-listed miners such as Philex Mining (PSE: PX) and Apex Mining (PSE: APX) trade on the PSE through any accredited stockbroker. You buy in board lots — the minimum batch size the exchange sets per stock — not single shares.

Important distinction: you're buying a mining company, not the metal. Its stock price is driven by gold prices plus everything else that affects a mining business — operating costs, ore grades, management, debt, local permitting. Mining stocks have historically tended to swing more sharply than gold itself, in both directions — that's operating and market risk on top of gold's own price risk, not a form of borrowed leverage.

MPH takeMight fit investors who already understand equities and want gold-linked exposure through a brokerage account — not a substitute for owning gold itself.

4. International gold ETFs via a global broker No PH listing

Where: There is currently no gold-tracking ETF listed on the PSE — the PSE's own ETF page confirms FMETF is its only listed ETF, and it tracks the PSEi index, not gold. To get ETF-style gold exposure (e.g., SPDR Gold Shares/GLD, iShares Gold Trust/IAU), Filipinos need an account with an international broker that offers US market access.

MPH takeMight fit investors who already have, or are willing to set up, an international brokerage account and want liquid paper-gold exposure without a PH-listed alternative.

⚠ What we're deliberately leaving out
Gold CFDs — Contracts for Difference, trading XAUUSD on a forex-style platform — are technically "gold exposure," but they're leveraged speculation, not investing. You don't own gold or a claim on it; you're betting on price movement, often with borrowed exposure. We're leaving them out because conflating the two is how beginners get hurt.

5Which one fits you

MPH takeThese are general starting points based on typical goals, not advice tailored to your finances. If you're unsure, a licensed financial adviser can help you weigh gold against your actual situation.

  • ✓
Total beginner, small budget: Digital tokenized gold (GCash/PDAX). Lowest entry, no storage problem, easiest to start and stop.
  • ✓
Want to physically hold something: Cebuana Lhuillier gold bars or a reputable jeweler. Accept the markup and the storage responsibility as the cost of tangibility.
  • i
Already investing in PH equities: Gold mining stocks give you gold-linked exposure through a brokerage account you may already have — but underwrite them as stocks, not as gold.
  • i
Already have an international broker: GLD/IAU is the most liquid, lowest-friction paper-gold option globally — the extra step is worth it if you're already set up.
  • ✕
Looking for short-term trading leverage: This guide isn't for you — gold CFDs are a different risk category entirely.

6Red flags to watch for

  • Any seller or article claiming you can buy gold directly from BSP — you can't; BSP only buys gold, it has no retail sales channel.
  • Any platform claiming to be a "PSE-listed gold ETF" — none currently exists; FMETF tracks the PSEi, not gold.
  • A physical gold seller who won't give you a certificate of authenticity or won't quote price per gram (only per piece).
  • A digital gold app that isn't clear about which entity actually holds the underlying physical gold, or that isn't a BSP/SEC-regulated platform.
  • Anyone promising a fixed guaranteed return "backed by gold" — gold's price floats; nothing legitimate can guarantee a fixed yield on it.
  • Pressure to buy immediately because "the price is about to spike" — gold is a widely traded, liquid asset with no fixed supply window; a legitimate seller has no reason to rush you.
Pro tip: As a general starting principle — not a number tailored to you — many first-time gold buyers start with an amount small enough that a price drop wouldn't affect their finances, then get comfortable with how the buy/sell spread actually behaves before scaling up. That spread, not the headline gold price, is where new gold investors most often end up with a smaller return than they expected. What amount makes sense for you depends on your own budget and goals.

7Frequently asked questions

Can I buy gold directly from BSP?
No. BSP's Gold Buying Program buys gold from registered miners, accredited traders, and even private sellers whose gold meets its specs — but there's no channel for the public to buy gold from BSP.
Is there a gold ETF listed on the PSE?
Not currently. The PSE's only listed ETF is FMETF, which tracks the PSEi index. Gold ETF exposure (GLD, IAU) requires an international broker.
Is digital gold (GCash, PDAX) the same as owning physical gold?
Not exactly. You're holding a token or account balance backed by physical gold held elsewhere, redeemable in value but not something you can walk in and pick up. It's closer to owning a claim on gold than owning gold itself.
Is gold better than a savings account or time deposit?
They do different jobs. Gold doesn't pay interest and can drop in price; a savings account or time deposit is capital-stable and, up to ₱1 million, insured by PDIC (the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corporation). Gold is a hedge and diversifier, not a place to protect money you can't afford to lose.

Which reader are you?

You've never bought gold before

Start with Section 2 so you don't waste time looking for a BSP gold counter that doesn't exist, then go straight to Section 3 — the digital tokenized gold option (GCash or PDAX) has the lowest entry point and the least to figure out on your first try. Read the KYC-tiering note before you buy so you're not stopped mid-purchase.

You're comparing a few options

Skip to the Section 4 comparison table and Section 5 for a goal-based breakdown. Pay closest attention to the "exit / liquidity" column — that's the column most guides gloss over, and it's the one that determines how easily you get your money back out.

You've been burned by a bad gold seller or platform before

Go straight to Section 6. It's written from the mistakes this guide has seen elsewhere — fake BSP claims, vague digital-gold custody, no certificate of authenticity — rather than generic caution.

Why trust this guide

Every regulatory claim in this guide is checked against the actual BSP page, statute text, or PSE listing it's based on — not against other articles. Gold platform fees, minimums, and product pricing change often, so those are marked separately from the settled rules.
